The Culloden Battlefield Tour from Inverness
From the UK’s most northerly city, Inverness we start the Culloden Battlefield Tour by travelling up 200 m towards Drummossie Moor, with wonderful views north over the Moray Firth.
You will soon arrive at Culloden Battlefield, one of the most visited and emotive battlefield sites in Scotland where you will hear about Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite rebellions and how the 1745 rebellion came to a tragic and bloody climax there.
We’re then just a 5 minutes drive away from the mysterious Clava Cairns, where you’ll visit enigmatic 4,000 year-old Chambered Cairns built by the earliest farmers about the same time as Stonehenge and used for rituals by these sun-worshipping people.
You will then visit the finest romantic, medieval castle in the north of Scotland, Cawdor Castle (the Thane of Cawdor is mentioned in Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’) then this is the perfect castle for you. Complete with moat, drawbridge, dungeon and a range of elegant rooms, some haunted, but all still lived in by the Campbells of Cawdor.
You then have a choice
Either to spend time at 19thc Inverness castle, the highest point overlooking the city, with splendid all round views and built on the former site of the real King Macbeth’s fortress. There you will hear about the city’s fascinating history dating back 2,000 years. Alternatively, you might use that time to shop, the shops are very close to the castle, or have a refreshment break.
We’ll then drive along the beautiful Beauly Firth and arrive at Beauly (from the French ‘beau lieu’ meaning ‘beautiful place)’. Today it is a charming Victorian village in the heart of the Clan Fraser lands and an important ‘Outlander’ book inspiration. You’ll visit the atmospheric ruin of the 13th century monastery with its medieval crypt. There you will also meet one of the oldest trees in Europe!
On then to the village of Muir of Ord, where we will visit one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, the Glen Ord distillery. Discover how the finest malt whisky is made. From then we’ll drive to the ancient Viking centre of Dingwall, where wild Vikings once traded, made their laws and carried out their punishments. Now it is a much quieter market town with many fine medieval buildings. We will then return to Inverness stopping to experience a magical Celtic healing well.
