The Great Glen Tour from Inverness
We reach Glenfinnan by travelling the full length of the Great Glen from Inverness. With its five connecting lochs, including Loch Ness, we stop briefly at Urquhart Castle to admire the ruins of this ancient castle and Fort Augustus with its canal locks before continuing down the glen to Fort William at the head of the sea Loch Linnhe.
Fort William and the surrounding Lochaber area, home to the Cameron clan, has some truly stunning scenery dominated by the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis at a mere 1345m! Then we journey along the famous ‘Road to the Isles’. Stopping half way in Glenfinnan, to view the impressive railway viaduct recently made more famous through its appearance in four of the Harry Potter films.
Glenfinnan is also the location of the iconic monument to the fallen Highland clansmen.
The Clansmen fought in the 1745 the last Jacobite rebellion. There is indeed plenty to admire from the iconic viewpoint at Glenfinnan, at the head of Loch Shiel.
Lunch could be in the railway carriage restaurant near to Glenfinnan station, which the Jacobite steam train regularly stops. We then return from Glenfinnan to Spean Bridge, with its famous monument to the Marine Commandos, the tough ‘Green Berets’. Who trained in this rugged mountainous area during the Second World War.
Along the route of the Great Glen Tour and travelling east of the great Glen there, is a fine alternative scenic route back to Inverness. Passing the western edge of the beautiful Cairngorms (Blue-Green mountains) and the towns of Laggan, Newtonmore and the ski resort of Aviemore. Then we stop briefly at Carrbridge, to admire its 300-year-old bridge and see the home of the World Porridge-Making Championships, before journeying onto Inverness.
The Great Glen Tour offers such a great chance to see these all of these amazing locations in one tour. Book now to secure the Scottish Highland trip that you will never forget.
